How I became location independent

It all started in Cape Town.

Back in 2008 after studying there and falling in love with the city and people, I was looking for a job that would allow me to move between Germany and South Africa whenever I wanted and have more than 14 days of vacation.

My first online job was as a Virtual assistant for a Swiss company. It helped me to quit my job in tourism within 4 months and learn many more skills to work online while getting paid for it. I became location independent overnight. Eventually I quit that job and ended up working in PPC (Pay per Click Marketing) and eCommerce.

Even better, Inspired by Tim Ferris, I was also able to start a successful 4 hour work week style online business. It didn’t make me rich but pays my bills until this day, and it’s given me the freedom to experiment with the location independent lifestyle, travel to places where I wasn’t sure if the internet would be ok, and figure out how to stay productive while travelling the world.

My life as a digital nomad

After a breakup in 2010 I needed a change. I left Cape Town and became a digital nomad by accident. I wanted to travel to other destinations where I could go kitesurfing after work.

Inspired by Susi Mai’s video I went to Boracay in the Philippines. I loved it and ended up working while traveling the world for four years. On my trip I discovered  many amazing places and kitesurfing destinations along the way.

The first two years as a digital nomad were amazing! This was also when I had the idea to launch the first version of the destination guide. At that time I had already been travelling in over 50 countries since my first backpacking trip to Thailand in 2003. I knew so many amazing places that I really wanted to share with you.

Later on things changed a bit.

I started to feel a bit lost and found it very difficult to connect to like-minded people who work and travel as well. This is easy in places like Chiang Mai or Bali but still (even today!) it’s often much more difficult when you’re travelling outside these main hubs.

This is the reason why I started the digital nomad network – to make it easier for us to meet other digital nomads around the world. Turns out I wasn’t the only one who wanted to connect. The network grew very quickly and is now one of the largest facebook communities for digitaI nomads in the world!

I also realized that even digital nomads need a homebase – a place we can call home and we enjoy to return to every once in a while. I didn’t want to move back to Germany after living in Cape Town. I wanted to spend more time in Europe to make it easier to keep in touch with family and friends from Germany. That’s why I was super happy when I found Tarifa!

One day in May 2015 I posted a link of a cheap transatlantic cruise from Spain to Brazil in the Digital Nomad Network and suggested that we should all join and escape the winter together. People loved the idea and over 100 nomads booked the trip.We had an amazing time travelling across the Atlantic and so we decided to organize more cruises for digital nomads in the future. The Nomad Cruise was born…

Some words of advice:

There has never been a better time to take full advantage of the location independent lifestyle and you really don’t need to become a full time digital nomad to hit the road. Simply take a workation (a short trip where you combine work and vacation). See how you like it and take it from there.

If you don’t have a location independent job yet I suggest that you also read my articles about all the jobs that allow you to work from anywhere and how to become a digital nomad.

Just one final piece of advice: Start networking with like-minded people as soon as possible. Connect online, ask questions and then meet offline in amazing places!

Visit hotspots like Chiang Mai, Bali or Medellin. Go to conferences, join us in Tarifa or the cruise ship and I’m sure you’ll have some of the best times of your life.

Wishing you happy workations and hope to see you on the road one day!

Johannes
